apparently joel n nicole were in the same area, hil was warned by the paperazzi, n joel n nicole were too, so they avoided each other:
Los Angeles is a small town, just ask Hilary Duff! On September 14, the Duff-ster almost bumped into her ex-boyfriend Joel Madden and his pregnant girlfriend Nicole Richie while they both shopped and ate on a small area of Third St. Nicole, 25, who is about five-months pregnant, and Joel, 28, ate lunch together at the popular Toast restaurant. When Hilary, 19, showed up with a girlfriend to go to Joan’s On Third and do some shopping, she saw a swarm of phtographers around the patio of Toast. “What’s going on over there?” she asked our CB snapper, who told her all the hullabaloo was for Joel and Nicole. Hilary made sure to duck in and out of her spots on the same street without bumping in to her ex, as the two did not end on good “let’s be friends” terms. We think Nicole and Joel got a head’s up from the snappers at Toast that Hilary was down the street as well
